Why Barack is president... he "gets" social networking!

I was doing some work on my LinkedIn profile this week http://www.linkedin.com/in/cameronthompson and saw a link to Barack Obama's profile, amongst others.

Obama's campaign made brilliant use of social media and online networking tools. But he hasn't stopped there - updating the U.S. people from YouTube on a weekly basis, trying to build a more open democracy and developing new platforms for people to communicat with his government.

Whatever you think about him and the political views he represents, social media is truly a part of what he is about, as opposed to his competitors for the presidency. All of their profiles still list them as candidates!

If the President of the U.S.A. thinks its worthwhile to develop their social media profile, that's good enough for me!

    hi,
The close ties between Google CEO Eric Schmidt and President Barack Obama are well-documented. Schmidt endorsed Obama’s Presidential campaign, and in the months since he has taken office, the leader of the world’s most popular search engine has also been a guest at The White House to discuss policy alongside some of the country’s top economists and financiers.

    Thanks for your comment.

This was not meant to be a political commentary or a conspiracy theory regarding the current president of the USA.

Merely, the comment is that some of Obama's success is due to his broad engagement with the public of America, and his use of online tools to accomplish much of that.

Further to this point, he did not merely use social media to get into office, but continues to use it to engage and inform the people of America.

This is the new PR, marketing, digital age that we live in, and others should take note!

    Hi,

Nice article.....I’m hopeful President Obama will hold off on sending e-mails from his Blackberry to his publisher about new book deals and seven figure book advances and start focusing on turning around our morally bankrupt nation.

Hi and thanks for your comments.

I can see that you feel strongly about this. I don't live in America and don't take a lot of interest in the politics there most of the time.

Purpose of this post was simply to point out that people from all sorts of industries and professions can use the power of social media to spread their message.

This was not a political endorsement or otherwise of Obama or his policies or behaviours.

Although having a blackberry will make him more accessible in his communications!
